THE UNREASON OF POLITICS by Bob Crew                    08 October 2006

Because most voters and MPs are incapable of listening to reason, the causes for which they stand are generally doomed, regardless of the rightness of their cause or the short-term success of their policies. Political and/or economic success has little to do with policy, but everything to do with the usual inability of politicians and their voters/supporters to be reasonable in pursuit of their policies.

In fact, policies are irrelevant in the absence of reason! This is because no policy can ever be 100% right in every detail - or perhaps even 50% right on occasion! - and, as we know, it can all too easily be absurdly mistaken! But pretending that it can be and is 100% right, and that it is not mistaken when there is clear evidence that it is mistaken, is what I mean by the unreasonable nature of politics and politicians.

A few examples -

If you are a right-wing capitalist, you are bound, sooner or later, to have a spanner thrown in the works by the left-wing because, in the cause of your capitalism, you unreasonably set out to sacrifice people to the free market come what may, to overwork and underpay as many as you can, to overtax the poor and undertax the rich, and to ruthlessly exploit or neglect the poor so that the rich can get richer. We have seen all these things in Britain, the United States and other capitalist countries.

By the same token, if you are a left-wing socialist or a communist, you are bound, sooner or later, to have a spanner thrown in the works by right-wing capitalism because, in the cause of your socialism or communism, you unreasonably set out to ignore all too obvious economic realities (e.g. you cannot provide for everyone and prevent the exploitation of the overworked and grossly underpaid if you are always going on strike, sabotaging the best efforts of hated managements for the sheer hell of it, demanding equality instantly, as of right, rather than being prepared to work at it or for it, and refusing to recognise or understand what advances in technology and the global economy can do to put your precious socialism and/or communism out of business. You cannot have equality of wealth if you do not create it in the first place, and if you overtax the rich to such an extent that they cease to invest or even to exist!).

Because both sides of this dismal coin are seldom prepared to listen to reason in these matters – either because they are blinded by their ideology, or because they hate each other and don't give a damn - there is no long-term hope for either of them, as we have seen in Britain since the 1950s where some extremely unreasonable socialists, communists, right-wing and middle of the road capitalists have all been equally at each other's throats for too long, and equally to blame therefore, as a result of which their policies have come crashing down (Tory Harold Macmillan, Socialist Harold Wilson, Tory Edward Heath, Tories Margaret Thatcher & John Major).

The only politicians who have traditionally listened and appealed to reason have been a minority of Liberals and Lib-Dems, not that anyone has listened to them! And suddenly New Labour in recent years who may or may not be about to come crashing down (I don't think so, despite the best efforts of the chiefly right-wing and entirely capitalist media to get rid of them).

By far the biggest obstacle to all political solutions and policies in the free world - whether you are right-wing or left-wing – is the inability of politicians and those who vote for them to be reasonable. However good or successful their cause, their unreason sooner or later prevents them from succeeding with it for very long. After all, if they had it right when they first came to power - which is why they were voted in - how come, what they had right, went wrong? Their unreason is usually what went wrong (not including imported inflation, oil and gas prices, of course, which are a real challenge to political reason and wisdom!).

This is why communism and most forms of socialism have gone wrong and why capitalism is always going wrong when it is not going right!

People are unreasonable. It's as simple as that.

What is your solution to this problem, oh wise one?

Life is too short? Make merry for as long as you can?
